I recommend Regassa N. Ruda with all my heart. When I needed to find a safe, compassionate place for my aunts Grand Heaven Adult Family Home proved to be a lifesaver for me. From the moment I met him it was obvious that he was a kind and experienced caregiver and could meet my aunts' needs.
It wasn't easy moving them. My Aunts Patty (late 80s) and Lucy (mid 90s) had lived together in Lucy's mobile home for many years and were firmly set in their ways. Each had chronic health issues, and their years of coping with the challenges of daily living had strained their relationship. As they grew less able to care for themselves it became clear to me that it was just a
matter of time before an emergency would force them to move.
Dealing with their independent living was also proving increasingly difficult for me. I was visiting them twice a week (driving 86 miles one way from my home in Olympia) to do their shopping, take them to medical appointments, and do chores around the mobile home. I'd cook for them and occasionally get take-out food as a treat, and we would talk and play cards late into the evening
They were full of stories about the past and loved the attention they were getting but making the trip back and forth twice a week in all kinds of weather was taking a toll on me, too. I became increasingly concerned about how they fared when I wasn't there and what would happen if there was an emergency.
It came in the form of a sudden illness requiring Aunt Patty to be hospitalized for nine days. I stayed with Aunt Lucy, coordinating with medical staff and social services to figure out how to deal with Aunt Patty's discharge. A nurse delegator was called in and evaluated both aunts. She determined they needed 24/7 care for their safety and well-being, and Providence social services referred me to some adult family homes, and one of which was Grand Heaven.
As I look back, I recall feeling the tension flow out of my neck and shoulders when Regassa and I first met. I felt confident that he could help my aunts to adjust to their new home, and sure enough, his kindness, consistency, and good food won them over and gave them a quality of life they had not had for many years.
